Redefine Your Focus To Improve Your Game
We are well into the golfing season this year, but you have hit a wall and just can\'t seem to improve your scores. Break out of your rut by changing your mental approach!
Boulder City, Nevada - 8/25/06 - Break Out By Using Your Head.
It\'s that time of year again. I see it on the ranges and courses everywhere. All those golfers getting more and more frustrated because they can\'t seem to \'figure out what they are doing wrong\'. They should be far enough into the season where improvement should be evident, but it\'s not. Many actually regress and get worse.
First, a vast majority of golfers are in dire need of a series of lessons. Secondly, they don\'t know \"how\" to practice. I firmly believe that you do play like you practice.
However, there is a caveat here. You must have the desire to put in the effort to improve your game. That means you must make time to practice. If you don\'t, forget about improving your game and be happy with what you have.
Here are a few tips and suggestions I give to my students throughout their lessons:
1.) I stress that they must practice more frequently. Warming up 15 minutes prior to a round once a week doesn\'t constitute \"practice\". Playing that round of golf doesn\'t count either.
Practice must focus on the one aspect in your swing that you have decided to work on. The big thing here is to work on ONE aspect! Personally, I work every day on my swing. No more than 1 hour each day, usually less. It\'s all about quality vs quantity. I tell my students to do the same if possible.
2.) Focus! How many people do you see at the range who mindlessly hit through an entire bucket of balls in about 30 minutes? All they are doing is wasting their money. Approach each ball in that bucket like it is a shot on the course. Choose a specific target to aim at and go through your pre-shot routing every time you hit a ball.
3.) Leave the driver in the bag!! If you want to improve, you need to work on \"scoring shots\". I teach the game to my students from the green back to the tee. These are the shots with your mid and short irons, and your wedges. Master these clubs and you will see your scores drop.
Better focus means better golf.
